MoCA – Officially The Fastest Growing Home Networking Technology

In-Stat – Press Releases.

Infonetics Home Networking Devices

Reports from the big market research firms are starting to confirm what should be obvious to home networking enthusiasts – that MoCA coax networking is the fastest growing home networking technology around.  Here’ s the Instat take:

MoCA experienced the greatest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 46% over the 2007 through 2010 time period.

and here is what Infonetics had to say:

The small but fast-growing MoCA coax-Ethernet adapter segment posted the highest revenue growth in 2010, up 93%

Given that MoCA is the technology behind new Multiroom DVR and Over-the-Top VOD services from DirecTV, Verizon FiOS, Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, etc… it’s not a stretch to imagine that MoCA may start catching up with WiFi in US Pay TV households.

From a recent Cisco router announcement:

According to industry research group IDC, only 39% of US homes have wireless, while only 11% are using Wireless-N technology.

MoCA will quickly surpass 10M US homes sometime this year so the prospect of catching and passing 11N is a very real possibility.  Passing 11N may have been unimaginable just a few years ago,  but MoCA coax networking may now be the best kept secret in home networking.

Coax Home Nets Could See Five-Fold Rise by 2011

U.S. cable TV providers are expected to roll out multi-room DVR packages later this year based on the MoCA home networking technology. The services let TVs in various rooms link to a single DVR. To date Verizon has led the charge for MoCA, deploying MoCA as part of its FiOS broadband service.   Time Warner, Cox, Brighthouse and Comcast, are likely to drive opportunities for MoCA in 2010 with the market moving from two million units per quarter towards up to 8 to 10 million units per quarter by the end of 2011, according to a report from Barclays Capital. MoCA’s next generation technology, MoCA 2.0 will be the next generation of MoCA. It will support two modes, one with throughput up to 400 Mbits/s and another with useable throughput up to 800 Mbits/s and is backward compatible with the current version 1.1.

15 Million Cable STBs Expected to Offer MoCA Support by 2014, Says ABI Research

15 Million Cable STBs Expected to Offer MoCA Support by 2014, Says ABI Research.

http://www.multichannel.com/photo/132/132977-Motorola_HD_DVR_Set_Top.jpgYour cable and satellite TV provider will soon be adding a MoCA network to your home in the form of new Cable DVRs.  Calling MoCA “one of the most widely-supported home media networking technologies”, ABI Research estimates 15 million next generation set-top boxes will have MoCA by 2014.  The network will be used for both “communication between multiple service operator boxes” and “communicating with third-party devices”.  MoCA is gaining a lot of traction in North America, and consumers are figuring out that they need more than just a wireless network in the home – they also need a wired network for the new digital entertainment services being offered.  With more MoCA networking products being introduced, consumers will have a choice of how they want to connect their home theater equipment whether it’s using a MoCA Ethernet-to-Coax Bridge or with a MoCA DVR.

Stay tuned for more MoCA product announcements.  Read the article here.

‘Connected’ CE Sales Poised to Explode, Driven by Consumer Demand – CE Pro

image

As if there was any doubt that connected CE devices would take off, someone actually put a number on it.  Parks Associates defines the category, which allows users to access and display photos and music on home networks and retrieve online contents like games and videos, includes networked TVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles, home media servers and set-top boxes.  And just how does everyone intend to connect these devices to broadband?  A wired home network makes more and more sense for both the number of connected CE products that will be in the home as well as the performance expected by consumers.  And if you don’t already have CAT-5/6 installed, a MoCA home network will be the next best thing.
