Amazon, Blockbuster, Facebook to Launch Yahoo TV Widgets – ClickZ

Yahoo Widgets

TV is about to get a whole lot more interesting.  Brand new Yahoo interactive TV widgets are set to launch in the next two or three weeks for Sony, Samsung, LG, and Vizio HDTVs that support the technology.

When a widget surfaces, the viewer can choose via the remote control to view free content, or purchase immediately downloadable content when offered from retailers like Amazon and Blockbuster. He also hinted that physical products which involve order fulfillment will eventually be sold through the widgets. YouTube offers free video content through its widget.

Yahoo expects that the TV manufacturers will make a big push to promote the Widgets feature for TVs during the holiday season and into Super Bowl weekend.  Meanwhile, consumers will be needing to connect their living rooms to their home networks more than ever.  MoCA Ethernet-to-Coax bridges along with a 4-port switch will give them a wired Ethernet connection for their HDTVs plus Xbox, Bluray player, and other connected CE devices.

What’s Next for Roku?

netflix-roku-box

Roku, the internet video player, which streams movies and TV shows from Netflix and Amazon, is going to be coming out with some new features soon, hopefully by the holiday shopping season.

Roku has distributed a software developers kit to media companies who want to add their offerings to Roku. This includes Blip.TVand Mediafly (both Web video/podcast companies) so far. We imagine all the big companies that do video on the Web — and, important, who want their video to appear on TV sets – will jump on, once it’s opened up, such as Revision3, Next New Networks, Boxee, YouTube, MLB Advanced Media, etc. Internet radio companies like Pandora and Last.fm, and photo sharing services like Flickr are fair game, too.

Roku will continue to announce new content partners. Blip.TV was announced recently, and will show up on set-top boxes this fall. We understand that Roku will be announcing a new partner next week. (We don’t know who it is.)

Adding More Ethernet Ports to Your MoCA Network

Let’s say you installed your MoCA network adapter kit and now have a blazing fast connection between the Xbox in your living room to your router upstairs.  Well, being a good citizen you now take your Obama stimulus check and go out to your local Best Buy and buy a brand spanking new Bluray BR-DVD Player.  Lo and behold, your BR-DVD has an Ethernet port so you can access BD-Live as well as get your software updates.  How will I share my one MoCA Ethernet port?!?

The answer is simple, it’s called a 5-port ”Ethernet Switch” and can be found at any electronics store or online for about $20 (Amazon had one on sale for $9 with rebate).  Like the name says, it has 5 Ethernet ports on it so you connect the Ethernet port from your MoCA adapter to one of the ports on the switch and Voila! – you now have 4 ports for all your devices!  If you really have a big tax return, you can buy an 8-port switch and get 7 extra ports to plug into your Xbox, Slingbox, TiVo, HDTV, Bluray, Squeezebox, Roku, etc…  Think of the money and aggravation you’ll save by not spending $700 on 7 different wireless adapters for each device that all interfere with each other and drop connection every 2 minutes!

Just another reason to get wired with MoCA now!

Amazon turns on HD video on demand for TiVo, Roku and others: SF Gate

Not suprisingly, Amazon just added HD videos to it’s already extensive library of TV and movie rentals that can be watched on PCs, TiVo, Media Center, and recently Roku set-top boxes.  Combined with the Netflix service, this is a pretty compelling library of entertainment for even the most avid TV watchers.  If the quality is anything like Netflix HD streaming, it probably won’t meet the standards for Bluray afficianados but will be good enough for day to day viewing on 720p capable HDTV sets.  Inevitably, Amazon will be a service offered directly on connected HDTVs and Bluray Players so a MoCA network will make the viewing experience all the more enjoyable whatever connected device you’re using.
