EchoStar Offers Sling Licensing
Until now, EchoStar has only offered the SlingLoaded feature only in its own boxes, including a model for Dish Network, European cable MSOs, and a tru2way box for the US Cable market. However, it is now offering the technology to other interested vendors.
EchoStar is most likely going to go after the largest cable set-top box suppliers in the US: Motorola, Cisco, and Pace Micro. This would allow for most people with DVRs to be able to watch content world-wide.
MoCA Powers Cisco’s New Cable Boxes
OK, I know this is an ad but it does give a good glimpse of what’s coming soon to a MoCA-enabled cable box near you. Specifically, the ability to play DVR-ed content on non-DVR cable boxes in another room! So now, instead of having to rent multiple DVRs for each room of the house, you’ll just need one living room DVR and a standard digital cable box in each bedroom. Each bedroom will be able to access the main DVR like it was there under the TV. The Cisco guy also talks about other great new features that will be added once your cable boxes can talk to each other via the MoCA network.
Tivo also has a similar feature that transfers shows between Tivos in different rooms.
MoCA Showing up on Motorola, Time Warner tru2way cable STBs due later this year
Motorola, Time Warner mixing up multiroom, tru2way cable setups due later this year.
More news out of NCTA, this time it’s a Motorola cable set-top box (STB) that will use MoCA to share saved HD programs around the house, a feature called multiroom DVR. The STBs also follow a standard called tru2way which allows STBs to be used in various cable networks and maybe even through a retail store in the future. Either way, through your cable company or local electronics store, MoCA is making it’s way into homes this year.
