XFINITY On Demand On Xbox

XFINITY On Demand On Xbox – Home.

Following the FiOS TV Xbox intro, Comcast now supports XFINITY TV on Xbox 360!  That means Xbox’s can now access Xfinity Free Video On Demand, National Broadcaster VOD, and Premium VOD directly through the Xbox interface over their home network.  However, you must be a Comcast TV and Internet subscriber and Xbox Live member to watch, but as the Xfinity FAQ says the content you access will not count against Comcast’s Internet bandwidth cap.

This is exciting news for the over 20 million Comcast TV subscribers and 17M Internet customers they have and even more reason to use a wired MoCA network to attach your Xbox to the Internet.  Here’s a quick video on how to connect your Xbox using MoCA for the best HD streaming and Online Gaming performance!

Are you using MoCA with Xbox XFINITY TV?  Comment below for a chance to win a 4-port MoCA Ethernet-to-Coax adapter from Channel Master!

Setting up a MoCA Network in your Home

How to Set Up a MoCA Home Entertainment Network

Xbox to Media Player Using MoCA

Here are a couple of HOW TO videos complements of the folks at ConnectMyStuff.org showing how you can connect your Tivo, Slingbox, and Xbox 360 together through a MoCA network.  The Slingbox sends HD video to another room using the SlingCatcher and some updated software while the Tivo’s exchange recorded HD shows with each other through MoCA.  The Xbox can play HD videos from a PC or NAS as well as through the Internet using Netflix.  MoCA can handle up to 6 HD video streams simultaneously and requires a MoCA adapter (less than $99 each) for each of the rooms where you want a network connection.  A lot easier and cheaper than running Ethernet CAT-5 through your walls and ceilings!

An 802.11n And Powerline Mess: High Definition Video Distress

An 802.11n And Powerline Mess: High Definition Video Distress – Brian’s Brain – Blog on EDN – 400000040.

Xbox 360

For all you gamers out there, Brian’s Brain did some testing using a Xbox 360 and laptop tethered together using HomePlug AV and found some interesting results.  Most notably that the HD streaming performance of the Xbox 360 can be measured using the Network Tuner application in the Windows Media Center section of the Xbox dashboard.  In his tests, the HomePlug AV performance looked like this:

Just marginally acceptable for viewing HD streams.  He goes on to talk about how streaming media might be affected by interference on the powerline.  Unfortunately, Brian didn’t have access to MoCA devices so we did our own test using the Network Tuner on Xbox 360 and got this:

Xbox 360 Network Tuner with MoCA

Note that this was an apples to oranges test in terms of recreating the same testing conditions, the MoCA graph shows maxed out HD performance from downstairs living room to upstairs den without the interference problems that you might see with powerline or wireless streaming.  Moral of the story, read the article and do your own testing using the Network Tuner application on Xbox 360 and feel free to add your comments / findings.
